How to Install PS5X on Xbox Series X|S
PS5X installs through Xbox Developer Mode — an official Microsoft feature — using the same Device Portal deployment flow app developers already use. No console modification is involved. First-time setup takes about 20–30 minutes.
Before you start: you need an Xbox Series X or Series S (Xbox One is not supported), a free Microsoft developer account, a PC on the same network, and the PS5X package from the official KytyPS5 GitHub releases. You also need your own legally obtained PS5 game files — this guide and this site do not provide games, firmware, or keys, and links to pirated content are the fastest way to get malware instead of an emulator.
The seven steps
Step 1: Create a free Microsoft developer account
Sign up for an individual developer account on the Microsoft Partner Center site with your normal Microsoft account. The individual tier is free and is all Developer Mode requires — you are not publishing apps, just unlocking the console's development dashboard.
Step 2: Install the Xbox Dev Mode app on your console
On the Xbox Series X|S dashboard, open the Microsoft Store, search for "Xbox Dev Mode", and install it. This is Microsoft's own app, published on the retail store — it is not a mod or an exploit.
Step 3: Activate Developer Mode
Launch the Xbox Dev Mode app and sign in with the developer account from step 1. The console reboots into the development dashboard. Your retail games and apps stay untouched — you can switch back to retail mode at any time from the Dev dashboard, and many developers flip between both daily.
Step 4: Note your Device Portal address and credentials
In the Dev dashboard, open Dev Home and enable the Xbox Device Portal (Settings). The console displays a local URL like http://IP-ADDRESS:port plus a username and password. Keep the Xbox and your PC on the same home network.
Step 5: Download the PS5X app package from the official project
On your PC, get the Xbox build of PS5X from the KytyPS5 project's GitHub releases page — it ships as a UWP app package (an .appx upload alongside its dependencies). The GitHub project is the only official distribution channel; avoid reupload sites, which are both a security risk and frequently stale builds.
Step 6: Deploy PS5X through the Device Portal
From your PC's browser, open the Device Portal URL from step 4 and sign in. Go to the Deploy/Apps section, upload the .appx package with its dependencies, and install. The console shows the app appear in its Dev-mode app list when the upload finishes.
Step 7: Launch PS5X and load a game you own
Start PS5X from the Dev dashboard. PS5X does not include games: you supply game files you legally own, placed on media the app can read. The four titles confirmed running so far are GEX Trilogy, Hellboy: Web of Wyrd, Marvel Cosmic Invasion, and Quake II — see the compatibility list for statuses and performance notes.
Switching back to retail mode
Developer Mode and retail mode are two dashboards on the same console. To go back to normal gaming, open the Dev dashboard’s main menu and choose “Leave Dev Mode” (or use the Xbox Dev Mode app again from retail). The console reboots into your ordinary dashboard with all retail games intact. This back-and-forth is expected usage, not a hack — which is why the ban-risk conversation around PS5X looks very different from modified-firmware scenes on other consoles.
Troubleshooting
- Device Portal will not connect. Check both devices share the same network and that no “AP isolation” or guest-network setting is blocking local traffic. Use the exact URL and credentials shown in Dev Home; the port number matters.
- Package upload fails or stalls. Deploy the dependency packages together with the main .appx; a missing dependency is the most common cause of a failed first install.
- PS5X launches but a game will not load. Check the compatibility list: only four titles are confirmed on current public builds, and even confirmed games can break or improve between releases. Update to the newest build before concluding a game is unsupported.
- No audio. Expected for now — only one confirmed title produces sound on current builds. Audio support is a known gap the project is working through.
- Performance is worse than reported. Frame-rate figures (25–45 FPS, with drops below 20) come from Series X footage. On Series S, expect less. Closing other apps and using the latest build are the two levers you control.
What happens after install
Updates ship fast — the KytyPS5 project published multiple builds in the October 18–19, 2026 window alone, each adding Direct3D 12 rendering fixes, faster asset loading, or memory savings. When a new build lands, redeploy it through the Device Portal exactly like the first install; settings and game files persist. Watch the compatibility list for what changed, since every new confirmed title tends to arrive alongside a fresh build.
